Rusa III
Araratian Dynasty — 625–615 BC
Kingdom of Urartu
Rusa III was a king of the Kingdom of Ararat (Urartu), identified in inscriptions as the son of Erimena. He is recorded as the father of Sarduri IV and may have been the nephew or cousin of Rusa II. There is significant confusion regarding the actual dates of his rule and his identity within the royal line. His name is documented on a massive granary at Armavir and on bronze shields from the temple of Khaldi found at Rusahinili (Toprakkale).
Rusa III, known as the son of Erimena, is a ruler of the Kingdom of Ararat (Urartu) for whom very little historical information has survived. His authority is confirmed by archaeological finds rather than literary chronicles. His name was inscribed on a massive granary at Armavir, indicating royal oversight of the state's food stores. Additionally, his name appears on a series of bronze shields found at the temple of Khaldi in Rusahinili (Toprakkale), which are currently kept in the British Museum.
Historical Confusion and Lineage
The identity and exact regnal period of Rusa III remain subjects of considerable debate. While he is identified as the father of Sarduri IV, his relationship to previous monarchs is unclear, with some suggesting he was the nephew or cousin of Rusa II. Because the available records are so limited, historians remain uncertain about the specific years he occupied the throne. He remains a figure known primarily through the scattered physical remains of the kingdom's late period.
